155 sub-districts of Abidjan will be connected to the drinking water network

The Minister of Hydraulics launched the connection works of 155 non-channeled sub-districts to the national network of Greater Abidjan, on Friday, May 8, 2020, in the presence of Mr. BERTE Ibrahiman, Director General of the National Office Drinking Water-ONEP. At a cost of 47 billion FCFA, this work, which is part of the project to improve the technical and financial performance of the drinking water sector (APTF), is a component of the vast program "Water for All ". According to Minister Laurent TCHAGBA, by launching this work, the government wants to put an end to the image of women banging pots through the municipalities of Abidjan to shout their fed up with the shortage of water in certain neighborhoods. .

In the context of the fight against Covid-19, it was important that we move quickly so that these neighborhoods which do not have drinking water could have it and that one of the barrier measures, that of hand washing , can be carried out without hindrance, "said the Minister of Hydraulics.

At the end of the works, the affected populations will be able to benefit from social connections and pay 10,000 FCFA instead of 167,000 FCFA, thanks to a subsidy.

The Deputy Mayor of Yopougon, Gilbert Kafana KONE, expressed his satisfaction with the start of this project which, in his view, will facilitate access to drinking water for vulnerable populations in his commune. He recalled that in 2014, the municipalities of Yopougon and Koumassi were the happy beneficiaries of a project of 8000 social connections. This has enabled the beneficiary populations to reduce their expenditure on drinking water by 50 to 70%. He therefore invited the population to make the most of this opportunity for easy access to drinking water.
L’ONEP est chargé  d’assurer la Maîtrise d’Ouvrage Délégué de ce projet, qui permettra à 1,6 million de personnes de bénéficier d’adduction en eau potable.
